A commemorative 2 euro coin has been created to mark the 100th anniversary of SNCB-NMBS.

The coin pays tribute to a century of railway history in Belgium. Since 1926, SNCB-NMBS has been part of travellers’ everyday lives and has played an essential role in the country’s mobility. With this coin, the anniversary takes on a very tangible form: an everyday object, but also a symbol that collectors can treasure.

100 years of history, engraved in metal

The coin design features the SNCB-NMBS 100th anniversary logo. The number 100 is represented as railway tracks, while the two zeros evoke the symbol of infinity. A locomotive from 1926 and a modern train echo each other in the engraving, creating a link between past and future.

The coin also features SNCB-NMBS’s historic logo, together with the years 1926 and 2026. The overall design illustrates a century of mobility, evolution and connections between people, cities and generations.

An official presentation at Train World

The coin was officially presented on 15 June 2026 at Train World, SNCB-NMBS’s railway museum in Brussels, in the presence of Jean-Luc Crucke, Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Environmental Transition, in charge of Sustainable Development, and Sophie Dutordoir, CEO of SNCB-NMBS.

On this occasion, the first coins were handed over by Giovanni Van de Velde, Commissioner of the Royal Mint of Belgium.

Three versions for collectors

The commemorative coin is available in three versions:

  • Brilliant Uncirculated, presented in a coincard in the colours of the 100th anniversary of SNCB-NMBS;
  • Proof, presented in a luxury case;
  • Reverse Proof, also presented in a luxury case.

The mintage is limited to 150,000 Brilliant Uncirculated coins, 4,000 Proof coins and 3,000 Reverse Proof coins.

These coins are legal tender throughout the euro area, but will not be put into circulation. They are intended for collectors and for anyone wishing to keep a tangible souvenir of this anniversary.

A symbol to treasure

After the postage stamps issued with bpost earlier this year, this 2 euro coin is another new symbol of the 100th anniversary of SNCB-NMBS. It reminds us that the history of rail travel in Belgium is above all a collective story: that of the travellers, but also of the women and men who bring SNCB-NMBS to life every day.
