Sustainability
SNCB-NMBS integrates environmental, social and ethical considerations into the heart of its procurement and consumption practices. In this regard, it pursues a Sustainable Procurement Policy centred on five sustainable objectives:
- Reducing the carbon footprint (CO₂ emissions)
- Protecting ecosystems (pollution, biodiversity)
- Preservation of natural resources (circularity)
- Respect for the rights and safety of all (human rights, working conditions, health & safety)
- Development of responsible supply chains (transparency, due diligence)
Supplier Code of Conduct
SNCB-NMBS has adopted a Supplier Code of Conduct which sets out the principles for a healthy, ethical and responsible working relationship between the two parties. All SNCB-NMBS suppliers are required to comply with the terms and conditions set out in this document..
Sustainability Assessment
To have a real impact on the environment and society, sustainability cannot be limited to a single stakeholder: it must be an integral part of the entire value chain. This is why SNCB-NMBS is increasingly asking its suppliers to carry out a sustainability assessment of their performance (such as EcoVadis or another equivalent ESG rating), which enables greater transparency, supplier commitment and a process of continuous improvement in environmental, social and ethical matters.

Railsponsible
Finally, SNCB-NMBS is a member of the Railsponsible initiative, which brings together numerous rail industry stakeholders at European level (operators, rolling stock manufacturers, spare parts suppliers), with the aim of promoting sustainability within the entire sector, particularly through sustainable procurement practices.
